Legislation recently introduced by Nevada Assemblyman, Jim Wheeler (R-39th District) would lower the gambling age threshold from 21 to 18 years. Wheeler is pushing for a change to the gambling age limit because he says he believes, “if you are old enough to serve your country, in foreign lands, you’re old enough to come to Las Vegas or Reno or Lake Tahoe and have a good time.”
Wheeler’s bill, introduced on Monday during the first day of the legislative session, also allows anyone 18 or older to work in a Nevada casino and other gaming sectors. However, the bill makes clear that the age limit change does not include the consumption of alcoholic beverages.
The idea to lower the legal gambling age received brief consideration in 2008, but majority leaders in both houses eventually dismissed the idea. Experts predict that should the bill pass, it wouldn’t have a great impact on the state’s economy and is more increasing the player base.
